The Outgro System

An Outgro® technical consultant will work closely with you, the farmer, to develop a biological solution that suits your farm. This involves five steps.

We recognise that fertiliser can be your largest off farm annual expense. It is these dollars spent that will reflect on your potential protein production for the year – yet it is always based upon the most limited of information …. A basic soil test. We at Outgro® have developed an industry leading computer monitoring programme to give you assurance you are heading in the right direction. Many cases to date tell us your soil is not in the greatest of health, reflecting in increasing animal health problems, poor stock performance, a reduced fertiliser response, hydrophobicity (water repellent soils), insect pressures, weed pressure, inability of pastures to hold in dry periods, reduction in clover populations and poor pasture recovery rates. By the time a clinical deficiency becomes apparent, you have already been losing production for quite some time! We need to treat the soil today as our patient…. Not a hydroponic lettuce operation. If we are feeling unwell and go to the doctor, firstly a history and a physical is performed. Doctors base 90% of a diagnosis upon a history and physical. A CBC (complete blood count) accounts for only 10% of this diagnosis.

It is simple.. We are the Doctors and the Soil is our Patient.

We at Outgro® initially perform a farm visit to gather information such as Fertiliser History, Animal health concerns, Your Farm Goals, Stocking rate, Known Deficiencies, current and prior Lambing percentages, Empty rates, Soil type, Rainfall, Critical feed times and Primary use. A Farm map is then obtained from you and all individual paddocks are loaded and grouped into relevant categories. Any treatment into the future can then be archived against every individual paddock – providing a level of full traceability. Given that 50% of the worlds market is now demanding more nutritious food, but in a sustainable fashion, it is our job as protein providers to step up to the mark and meet these needs. It is only time before this level of information is required to get your protein into these high disposable income markets. By becoming an Outgro® client you are ready to meet these demands by default.

Once we have obtained your goals and your farms current situation, we then put on our gumboots and head to the field with our comprehensive kit, where Outgro® Field Appraisals are performed on your assigned monitor paddocks, measuring information such as:

  • Pasture Brix % (complex sugars and; nutritional density)
  • Clover Brix %
  • Milk Brix %
  • Colostrum Brix %
  • Clover content and size
  • Thistle, flat weeds and moss pressures
  • Earth worm populations, size and activity
  • Soil Temperature
  • Visual observation
  • Soil Friability & Compaction
  • Surface litter decomposition
  • Rooting depth
  • Visible fungi and aerobic bacteria presence
  • Insect pressure

Digital Photographs along with GPS waypoints (to enable accurate site re-visits) are taken, and we take soil and herbage samples which are comprehensively analysed by Hills Laboratory.

Once the data has been gathered and the analysis done, what happens to all that information?

Some of the questions we are often asked are linked to backing up fertiliser programs with good analytical data. It is all very well promising results, but where is the evidence? You have contributed significant funds to your fertiliser program, but how do you know if you have received value for your money? What is going on with the life in the soil? Is the pasture more nutritious at the same time every year?

Well, the good news is Outgro® have developed a Web based system that allows you (and only you) easy access to all your farm information in a convenient format. It is called the Computer Delivery System (CDS) and is the creation of Jim McMillan, the founder of the Outgro System.

It is a purpose built system that monitors all aspects of an Outgro® Fertiliser Program on your farm.

This data is kept safe for you to access at any time. This is particularly exciting as it will enable farmers to demonstrate that a sustainable farming system has been used on any given paddock. There is more and more consumer demand for sustainably produced nutritious food. The CDS will provide all the supporting data that your product was produced in a sustainable manner. We strongly believe this consumer demand will allow for a premium for this type of product compared to products produced under a conventional system.

Once you have accessed your Farm Home Page with your own Logon and password, you will see the current farm details and contacts.

On our first visit to your farm we will select representative areas on your farm to regularly monitor your soil health and nutrient reserves, Brix levels and herbage nutrient levels. Regular monitoring allows us to continually refine your farm plan to ensure you are gaining maximum value for your dollar.

As an Outgro® client you will be able to view your Outgro® Farm Plan and data by accessing our Computer Delivery System (CDS) which includes:

  • Your farm plan
  • Detailed budget
  • Treatments past and present
  • Application data
  • Nutrient budget
  • Herbage samples
  • Soil samples
  • Brix levels

A powerful function of the CDS is the ability to do trending analysis. At the click of a button it can show you what has been going on in a certain part (or whole of) the farm over the period that data has been gathered. You may want to see how a particular paddock has responded to certain inputs? You could be interested in monitoring the trend in some key elements. You can confirm that once deficient elements have been restored to the optimum levels, or that production has surpassed targets – all at the click of a button. The CDS is designed to provide the farmer with secure, easy access data to give comfort and peace of mind that dollars being spent on the fertiliser program are paying dividends.

Outgro® recognises the importance of monitoring all aspects of your fertiliser program!

Above is an example of one of 70 different graphs that can be produced for one or multiple paddocks to provide trending analysis to highlight any changes that have occurred in nutrient levels of herbage, soil nutrient reserves, brix levels, clover content etc. This data not only allows you to view any changes that have taken place, but allows your Outgro® Consultant to continually refine your plan to ensure you are gaining maximum value for your dollar.

Once the data has been assessed you will receive a draft Outgro® Farm Plan tailored to your property. The Plan will recommend the product, frequency and timing of application and all the associated costs.

Once you have approved your Plan, it will be updated and put into action with our Outgro® Computer Delivery System, which also controls the mixing, storage, transport and application of your product so the specified treatments go to the correct areas at the agreed times with minimal hassle and full traceability.

The Outgro® Factory is a purpose built facility for the storage, preparation and mixing of our biological treatments. Our mixing tank is large enough to mix 18 tonne of product at a time with the aid of an 11kw stirrer. All trace elements, minerals, lime flour etc are carefully weighed before mixing.

All liquids are metered through calibrated flow meters prior to being mixed. If other products which require grinding, e.g. Ammonium Sulphate, RPR etc are needed, they are loaded into our hopper using calibrated scales on our forklift, and then augured through our custom-built hammer mill, which grinds the particle size down to powder before entering the mixing tank. Mixed batches are then pumped into one of our four 36,000kg capacity storage tanks which also have 11kw stirrers to allow mixes to be kept in suspension.

Mixes are then ready for delivery to the customer, which is done by one of our specialty built tanker truck and trailer units. These rigs have a 23 tonne carrying capacity and the tanks have their own in-built stirring system to keep product in suspension until application. A custom-built helicopter landing pad on top of the truck tank, along with fuel and water storage gives these rigs a state of the art approach to fertiliser application, which can be carried out in the most efficient and hassle-free manner for the customer.
