Sheep and Beef Farmer of the Year Competition

Tararua Sheep and Beef Farmer of the Year Competition

A desire to promote business excellence in sheep and beef farming in the Tararua district has resulted in the creation of the new Tararua Sheep and Beef Farmer of the Year competition.

Organised by a group of local professionals and industry leaders, the competition is being modelled on the long-running and successful Wairarapa Farmer of the Year competition. It will be open to sheep and beef farmers from an area spanning Norsewood and Cape Turnagain in the north, and Rongomai to Mataikona to the south.

OUTGRO are proud to be a major sponsor for this competition and to hold the Competition Naming Rights for three years.

The Tararua Sheep and Beef Farmer of the Year competition will be open to farm owners and managers, and after selection of the winner, a public field day on the winner’s property will be held in the autumn of 2013.

A similar event had been held annually in the Tararua district until nine years ago, and John Heald, who heads the committee, believes now is a timely introduction for the new competition. “We are looking for business excellence and innovation; – identifying farmers who excel in their farming practice across a range of disciplines,” he says.

The team at OUTGRO would like to encourage their sheep and beef farming clients in the Tararua area to enter this competition.

The prize package for the 2013 competition is approximately $20,000 in cash and product.

As part of this competition the committee will also be hosting a:

Young Shepherd of the Year Competition

The organisers believe “there are some good young guys out there shepherding, and they want to encourage them towards excellence in farming too.”

The prize package for this competition is valued at $5000.

Entries for both competitions close on 15th February 2013. Judging will take place early March and a Field Day will be held on the winning property at the end of April. Entry forms are available at Farmlands Branches, MCI in Dannevirke or can be downloaded from the OUTGRO website at: www.outgro.co.nz
